Food waste recycling is the process of collecting food waste in green/eco-friendly bins that are specifically set aside for food waste. The waste is then collected by food waste recycling companies. These companies process the food waste and convert it into compost used by farmers as mulch.
This not only reduces the amount of waste that goes to landfills but prevents the depletion of non-renewable resources, meaning conservation of the environment. Here's what you need to know about food waste collection and recycling:
Residential and Commercial Premises
You might realise that if you live in a residential premise, especially a rented property, you will only need to separate your waste and dispose of it as instructed. This is because the property owner will have already contacted a waste collection and recycling company and registered for waste collection services.
If you are the property owner, you need to look for a waste collection and recycling company and request for waste collection. You will, of course, incur a small recurring fee.
The same applies to commercial businesses, especially those who specialise in food. Look for a food waste collection and recycling company that can handle the amount of food waste your business produces and at the rate it produces the waste.
Considerations When Choosing a Food Waste Collection and Recycling Company
Try to find a company that offers as many waste collection services as possible to limit the number of things required of you. What does this mean?
Find a company that provides food waste bins, cleans them, collects the waste and maintains the bins (repairs and replacements). This means that the only thing you have to do is ensure the right waste goes into the bins and that you keep the bin area clean.
The food waste recycling company will also give you a list of the things you are not supposed to put in the food waste bins. Such things can contaminate the quality of the compost generated. Additionally, the company can have a hard time sorting out the waste (removing and disposing of waste that should not be part of food waste).
Private and Council Food Waste Collection and Recycling Services
You may come across private and council food waste collection and recycling services/companies. They both offer the same services, but council waste collection might be more affordable than private company waste collection services.
You may also find that council waste collection services may not be available for all businesses in some states, but this is gradually changing.
My parents raised me with a love for the environment from a very early age. Our family home was always big on recycling where we could, and I carried this ethos through to my own home when I moved out. Not everyone realises how easy it is to incorporate recycling into their daily life, so I began this blog to help share my advice on this topic. From recycling your own home rubbish to using recycled products when renovating, my posts cover a multitude of ways you can embrace recycling. Teaching your kids how to compost is another way you can recycle your rubbish, so come on board and see which recycling techniques appeal to you.
